Sealants help prevent tooth decay from forming in the natural pits and grooves of teeth. These grooves can trap food which can be difficult to remove with normal brushing and rinsing. If left in place, the trapped food allows bacteria to multiply, eventually causing tooth decay. Sealants are bonded directly into the pits and fissures, sealing out bacteria. While sealants are durable, they are not permanent, and they do not replace the need for regular brushing and flossing. Normally, sealants last approximately 3 years before needing replacement, although we're finding our newer materials to be holding up longer.

Most insurances cover sealants at 100%, but they may restrict the benefit after a certain age. It is very important to make sure your child gets this cavity-preventing care while they are young. Adults may also benefit from sealants, but for adults, we may not recommend sealing every pit or groove if there is no evidence of cavity-forming potential. However, if an examination reveals pre-carious lesions, we will recommend sealants to prevent the lesions from becoming cavities.
